Decidous forest (Photosynthetic light acclimation experiments)

R. Oguchi has been doing fieldwork in the experimental forest of Hokkaido University in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan. They artificially made a gap by pulling down canopy trees with a bulldozer. Oguchi has examined how photosynthetic properties of several species in the understory acclimated to improved light conditions.
The bulldozer!

How the forest looked like before the disaster. The canopy is closed by tall trees.

A tree was uprooted and a gap was formed. See also how the forest ground was disturbed.

These photos taken with a fish-eye lens ( FC-E8) show the openess of the forest canopy. (Above) Closed canopy. (Below) A gap made by pulling down a tree.
